Evidence and Property

The main function of Evidence and property custodians is to be responsible for ensuring the safety and condition of property discovered at a crime site, confiscated or abandoned. Civilians or law enforcement staff may be trained to perform the duties of a police property custodian.

Evidence and property custodians should be comfortable using a computer and keeping accurate records. Additionally, they should have strong communication skills and be comfortable communicating with law enforcement staff, lawyers and others who may have an interest or ownership in the property. Evidence custodians should also be reliable, trustworthy and pay attention to details since any mistakes could adversely affect a court case.
